Summer Fun = College Admission Stuff Done!

Posted on June 10th, 2019 to College Admission by

As the school year comes to a close you are likely having visions of beach time, hanging at the pool, summer camps, road trips, and neighborhood barbecues dancing in your head. As well you should!

You have worked hard this past year in and out of school. It’s important to take time to reenergize for next year; it’s important to spend time doing the things that you enjoy doing. With that in mind, summer can also be a time to check off some “to-do’s” on you college admission checklist.

“But Evan, why? Summer is my time!”

I couldn’t agree more, which is why I have a good reason for making this suggestion. Take a moment and think about what you do during the fall months….go ahead…I’ll wait. Ok, you got it all. Let me guess: you are taking classes, have tons of homework, are involved in a bunch of extra/co-curricular activities, have family obligations, have a part-time job, etc. OK! Now add one more time consuming task to your already full day…college applications! By now it’s probably starting to sink in that your fall just got a heck of a lot busier. Hopefully you are also realizing that checking off some tasks this summer could lighten the load.

Now just because you are working on your college application to-do list doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your summer. It just means you have to be thoughtful about how you are spending your time. Enjoy your time on the beach, but maybe spend some of that tanning time reflecting on what you want to write about in your essay. Work hard at your summer job, but use your breaks to reflect on what you want out of your college experience. Have fun on that road trip, but use some of your time riding in the car to work on your to do list (maybe even visit a school or 2 along the way).

Here are some college admission tasks perfect for the summer months:

  • Start your college essay
  • Continue to research schools
  • Draft you college list
  • Visit campuses and take a tour
  • Prepare for the SAT or ACT
  • Start gathering information for your FAFSA
  • Don’t forget, you aren’t alone on this journey! Feel free to reach out for support when you need it. Your family, friends, and school administrators are here to support you on this journey!
